The word Shaolin means "Young forest" and takes its origin from the location of the original temple built in northern China among a group of young trees. The term Chuan means "to clasp the hand of the Dharma" and Fa means "to grasp the inner principles and laws of nature". When Chuan and Fa are combined they mean "To grasp the spirit of nature in a learned way".
